  One thing that IS notable is that by the time Belgium flooded the plains around the Yser river, the Germans already had two or three bridgeheads across it, and the Belgians had started drawing back to a railway embankment several miles to the west of the river. The opening of the locks at Nieuwpoort was a desperate act and without it the Germans would've almost certainly broken through to at least the French border.

  I only wish those videos where longer. Almost every video topic could be a whole series. There&apos;s always more to say and more to explore. But I know it&apos;s not that easy.

  This could have been a two part discussion - one focused on whatifs, one from the German (Central Powers) perspective, the other from British/allied.

  My Grandfather won the DCM at the 1st Battle of Ypes L/CoH Norman Watt 2nd Life Guards 6 Nov&apos; 1914. Leading a baonet charge at Kliene Zilibeke and recovering the body of his C.O. Maj. The honouable Hugh Dawney who had all the order of battle marked on his map an intelligence gold mine had Gerry got it. &nbsp;Decorated in the Field at Loose by the King and Prince of Wales. .
