  If you sit down and order food from a menu to a waitress, you tip based on service. If you have something delivered to your hotel, you tip based on how many stops and how hard it was for them to carry. If you go to McDonald's or other fast food places and the kiosk asks if you want to tip say no unless you really want to, I never do.

  So glad to hear you get to visit the states. You probably won't be anywhere near where I live (not far from Cleveland, Ohio) but if you make it this way I would love to buy you and anyone you come with dinner. Enjoy your trip and don't be afraid to talk to people. It will make your day. It always does for me.
