Kiev 4a is a pretty good copy of the Contax rangefinder...right down to the crazy focus mechanism!

My first SLR was a Zenit with a Helios lens. When photography became my premier hobby l searched high and lo for the lens to no avail. Subsequently l have acquired some Soviet era glass and Chinese adapters but the Helios 44-2 bokeh still eludes me.

My father had two FT-2 panoramic cameras back in the 1960s, and took some super pictures with them, having some blown up into big prints about four feet wide. My father was a skilled model engineer, and he modified one of the FT-2 cameras to take standard 35mm film cassettes, a job requiring quite a bit of surgery, certainly not for the faint-hearted, but it made the camera much more usable. I still have that camera.

My first camera was a Zenit B with 58mm Helios lens. After a couple of years I upgraded to a Fujica ST701 which used the same screw-mount lenses. My father had a camera called the Cosmic 35, a zone-focusing 35mm point and shoot.

19:33: This is a Soviet-made Narciss (Нарцисс), a very compact 35mm half-frame camera produced in the 1960s by the LOMO factory in Leningrad.

Bought a Zenith 80 in the early seventies ….They were supplied in a leather case with a spare magazine …..l can’t remember how much it was. The camera introduced me to processing films and printing …..over fifty years later l still use Russian Helios 44 and a Jupiter M21 lenses…

Brings back memories of TOE Ltd (Technical and Optical Equipment) the UK importers, from when I worked in the camera retail trade.

FED "was put together by Felix Dzerzhinsky" - It grew out of his initiative, and was named in his memory. He died in 1926, and the project to produce the camera got underway in 1932.
Very interesting, thanks 👍🏻

Best show ever! My best friend in high school (late 50s to very early 60s, had several Soviet Cameras. I had a Mamiya 16mm camera, which I would not be surprised to learn had been copied by the Soviets.

Thank you for the video. I had a lubitel 166b twin lens reflex camera many years ago. At the time it retailed around £20. If you were patient and used a film ilford pan f. It was capable of great results. Once again a fascinating video. The diversity of soviet cameras was awesome.
