I live in the UK and did my 4 years ish apprenticeship way back in 1983 onwards, we too had crappy jobs to do as part of our learning curve but i always remember an old Carpenter/Joiner called John Rowley and he sort of took me under his wing and whenever i was on the same site as him he never let anyone give me any menial jobs, he always said how is he going to learn his trade sweeping up & making tea, i'll never forget that man as long as i live and i'm 58 now so carried that with me over 40 years. I know you don't reply to any posts on here but thought i'd share that with your viewers.

You guys have really nailed your unique editing style. It's a real treat to watch. I don't always have the time to watch right away but every video gets watched. Thanks for your positive energy and have a great weekend.

As a 71-year-old carpenter (53 years on the job), I can state with no doubt whatsoever that the "crappy" jobs we constantly put off consume more time and more of our mental energy thinking about them and cause more self-inflicted guilt than the actual time and effort it takes to do them when we finally get tired of obsessing over them. This has been proven to me so many times that it has earned the honor of being included in the rare category of verifiable facts.

Love the chat at the end!
All these videos on YouTube, it's not the technical information that attracts people to them, it's the human interaction and you two do it so well.
Just a Kiwi couple talking without hyperbole about your life and being gracious enough to share it with us.

Respect

Leave Same Or Better, Everything
Be Kind
☮️🙋

We recently had 2 apprentices from 2 different areas of carpentry.

First one had spent 2 years working for a lame carpenter who was making him do lots of non carpentry jobs like washing his car, cleaning of his house and all sorts of stupid shit that’s clearly not carpentry. Which he stayed too long and his skills showed.

Now our other apprentice had done his 3 years running around building pre fab variety of homes, all aspects of the builds and given lots of responsibilities ( treated poorly by boss and carpenters and doing lots of crap jobs too but he stuck it out and then jumped ship to join us building architectural homes ). His dream.

Two completely different skill sets and level of experience BUT we had to pay same pay due to their time in their apprenticeship.

Both being challenged before us with crappy jobs and questioning if the trade they’ve chosen is for them.

Anyway here we were with 2 different people with different everything when it comes to carpentry / building.

Anyway we had to let the less skilled apprentice go. His skills showed set was of an early second year tops. But part of that’s on him for not jumping ship earlier. I spoke to him and suggested he jump onto pre fab knock up homes to get his skills up a lot faster before entering the architectural side of carpentry.

As for the other apprentice we kept on and he’s GREAT and worth his weight in gold.

Now he became friends with the apprentice we let go so I have told our kept apprentice to keep him motivated to go find that apprenticeship that will upskill him and suit his situation and don’t look down on us letting him go but looking at it as a positive.

He was questioning carpentry and pursuing the apprenticeship.

But our kept apprentice kept harping on him and BOOM he’s found a pre fab carpenter, knocking up homes quicker and learning the basics ten fold.

It’s not an easy career at the start to stay focused and motivated especially doing crap jobs, working for builders who are using you or treating you poorly, but if you can stick it out you can get to a stage where those struggles made you a very patient carpenter when challenged with crappy jobs and many ways to use your brain to solve problems to make the job easier.

Definitely a career choice that will sort you out in the apprenticeship years.

To all young apprentices the work doesnt necessarily get easier but you do become more resilient to hard work and problem solving situations.

Totally worth the hard yards.

It definetly help Scott, I often find myself questioning my job choices. Especially when crawling around attics in the Florida summer while being 6' 5".

I’m glad you didn’t quit Scott. Just think, NZ would have had one less skilled builders and we wouldn’t have had all those entertaining videos. One of the things that makes your channel interesting is that you have multiple projects - such as the coffee shop and Ray’s house. Of all the trades you undertake, carpentry is the cleanest and most enjoyable And I’m watching from Ireland, the other side of the world. And you’re a better looking guy now !!
