If you have flames shooting out of the furnace that;s not a filter problem. You got bigger problems. A cracked heat exchanger putting carbon monoxide into the living space.

HVAC guy told me to nver run a MERV 13 filter that is only 1 inch thick as it will burn out your fan motor nothing higher than a MERV 8 so I run a MERV 5 and replace them every 3 months as the filters have very little dust on them. Have my system fully services every 3 years to include cleaning the outside coils and inside exchanger if needed, so far no cleaning has been required.
