You asked about games in the 40K setting, my recommendations (I'm a PC gamer so console experience my differ)

Space Marine 1 and 2, third person action that is a cornerstone of the 40K game experience and a good representation of what a Space Marine is as described in the lore. You don't need to play them in order but I would strongly recommend you do.

Rogue Trader is effectively BG3 in 40K and it's well done. Lots of world building, lots of lore accurate detail and really solid shout for any RPG fan. There's another title coming from the same developer in the same style too, Dark Heresy.

Mechanicus is a turn based tactical combat game that pits the forces of Mars against a waking Necron tomb world. If you like turn-based games, this is a strong recommendation and it has an incredible soundtrack too.

Dark Tide is worth a look, first person co-op asymmetric horde shooter. Fast, hectic, action filled and good laugh with friends.

Boltgun is a first person boomer shooter, Doom-esque, and is just good fun. It's not complicated, it's not overly fancy, it just does what it does and does it well.

Dawn of War is a series of real time tactical games but each is a little different. The first is a traditional RTS, with base building, and resource harvesting mechanics. It is beloved, has multiple expansions and has recently been remastered. Dawn of War 2 is more of a character/hero centric tactical experience and has none of the base building of the first game and is more focussed on character and squad management. Dawn of War 3 is not loved by the community at all. Dawn of War 4 is due for release imminently. Speaking of soon-to-be-released...

Total War 40K is coming and is looking good. As can be expected, the scale is huge and after the success of game based on Warhammer Fantasy Old World, we have high hopes.

Lastly, and 40K adjacent, Necromunda Hired Gun. Necromunda is a single planet in 40K with a long history. It is a hive world, something for you to look up another time. Hired Gun shows what a hive represents pretty well and gives a good idea of what living in one would be like. It is also great way of showing scale of the imperium construct around the average person and just how utterly insignificant any individual would be.

There are loads of others, many well worth your time but these are some the obvious and best titles that I can recommend.

There is some diseases that Nurgle makes that are similar to the zombie virus.

That Ork voiceover was on point and lore accurate. (This is not a joke)

Lore-wise the Custodes are immune to the corruption of Chaos and non of them fell to ruin. Got something to do with genetic and psychic tinkering from Big E.

If a Sister knocks on your door, you've got a high chance of dying simply because she thinks you are a heretic, and any further questions are useless. You might survive if she can be reasoned with.
If an Inquisitor knocks on your door, you have a 99% chance of dying, because that means you are most likely guilty. That 1% stems from them asking you for directions to the actual heretic, and you better answer fast, else you are guilty of wasting their time.
If a Grey Knight knocks on your door... well that's it, you might be able to say your prayers to Big E fast enough before the bullet blows your head off.

And yeah, Necrons and Custodes are my favorites too and of course THA BOYZ!

The Custodes knew everything, from the beginning and they warned the Emperor about the Primarchs.

About the "zombies". There is a thing called the Poxwalker virus, a Nurgle sickness that infects not only your body, but also your soul. You get turned into a shambling not-quite-dead-yet body, moved by the malignant will of Nurgle until you collapse, and the worst part is that your consciousness is fully aware of what your body is doing and cannot stop it.

I think Death Guard are probably the closest thing to the “zombie faction” you’re imagining. Death Guard are literally rotting, diseased corpses that just refuse to die. Like Plague Marines (their version of Space Marines) shambling forward through wounds that should kill them, backed up by actual hordes of Poxwalker zombies.

One important note is most of the framework around the current Imperium was NOT designed by the Emperor.

He is definitely a prick but he has a genuine vision for humanity as a living paradise, he wants them to be happy and safe and cultured.

The rub is that he is also pragmatic; he had to very quickly unite Terra and then the galaxy and he knew tiptoeing wasn’t the way. This why very brutal methods such as the Thunder warriors and their culling happened, because he didn’t have 10,000 years to do it right it had to happen fast.

Same with the Space Marines after his Primachs were scattered; it can’t be overstated how much this altered the trajectory of the Galaxy. The Emperor was finally being able to slow down and take reign of the minute details of rule that influenced daily life and prosperity. Within decades of the Primarchs being born within his palace, they and the legions would have been trained and raised to lead the great crusade as originally envisioned. Within a few hundred years most of the galaxy would have been under the Emperor who would have been uplifting the lives in new ways of all within it every single day. Above all else the Emperor was a scientist (not engineer that’s the mechanicum) and his innovations were one of the greatest contributors to the advancement of humanity as a whole.

His webway project would have cut all of the Imperium (which would one day be the entire galaxy) off from Chaos and protect them forever. Once the Primarchs were scattered he again had to personally lead a fast and brutal solution, costing humanity centuries of progress under his rule.

Once he was disabled, scared and greedy men took over. They had just fought and barely won a war against Demons that was barely stopped by their Emperor, who was now being worshipped as a god. The ones who could have stepped up and stopped this degradation into religious fervor were either incapacitated (the Primarchs, almost all loyalists wounded or missing) or bound by duty to inaction (Custodes, ironically as they ONLY took orders from the Emperor once he stopped giving orders, they just waited and stood guard).

Men either truly believed their God Emperor had saved them and was worthy of worship or they lied while positioning themselves as middle-men of the faith (“worship this God I’m a priest of and speak for”). Entire cultures and civilizations rose and fell around this framework, most of the current imperium and the brutality in particular come from one specific man named Van Dyre that lead the Imperium for a time and was so corrupt even the Custodes finally left the palace to confront him. The sisters of battle were originally created purely as his concubine bodyguard force, of which he recruited tens of thousands of women for.

Thousands of years of this completely eroded the Imperium. Anyone who could have taken charge was either physically unable to act or so spiritually crushed by the “death” of the Emperor that by the time people started acting again, this is what it’s all become.

Luckily Primarchs are waking up/returning. Gulliman (ultramarine primach) is effectively leading the Imperium now and trying to right the ship. When he woke up from thousands of years of stasis he was so depressed at what the Imperium had become that he considered if it was even worth living anymore, that’s how disappointing and far the current imperium has fallen that it makes even a Primarch, who personally knew what the Emperor wanted, to be suicidal.

You are right about the Necron being natural enemies of the Tyranids.

    15

  • @ario93 · 1 month ago

There is no motivation for either the Necrons nor Tyranids to fight each other. So Tyranid fleets actively avoid Necron tomb worlds, and Necrons have no purpose to attack the Tyranids since there is nothing to gain for them either.
