  You’re right! That video would put a school classroom asleep in 5 minutes. There are a couple of YouTube videos filmed during construction that are excellent.

  For decades the highway actually traversed the top of the dam, there were no nearby bridges. As traffic on the highway increased it was becoming a bottleneck, particularly since the approaches were steep and winding - difficult for large trucks.<br>However, after September 11th 2001, the potential threat to such an important piece of infrastructure, made constructing a separate highway crossing a priority, so now, you can still cross the dam on the road, but it is a detour off of the main highway.<br>Last I checked, they still give tours of the powerhouse.

  Yes, there’s a road on it. 😊<br><br>History Channel had a good documentary about Hoover Dam (the whole dam project, lol) in which they interviewed people who worked on it who were still alive. They had workers repel down the side of the cliffs to pressure wash the exposed, freshly excavated cutouts in preparation to pour the concrete in them. The guy being interviewed was directing the constant truck traffic entering and exiting the work zone. One of the washers fell (fatally, it would turn out)and landed near him so he ran over to check on the guy. His boss instantly showed up and yelled at him, telling him to get back to his post.<br><br>They described the giant tubes that the river flowed through while diverted. There was room for humans to walk between the tubes and the tunnels they ran through for inspection/monitoring, etc. The interviewee said the sound and vibration was very intimidating.

  Hoover dam is dwarfed by the Grand Coulee dam on the Columbia River in Washington State. &nbsp;While Hoover is 176 feet taller, Grand Coulee is four times as wide as Hoover dam. &nbsp;Hoover contains 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete. &nbsp;Grand Coulee contains 12 million cubic yards of concrete. &nbsp;It is the largest hydro electric generating plant in the United States. Hoover generates around 2,074 megawatts of power, roughly 4 billion kilowatt hours per year. &nbsp;Grand Coulee generates 6,809 megawatts of power, over 21 billion kilowatt hours per year.
