I had no idea August was this important for peonies. I’ve definitely cut mine back too early before, thinking I was helping them. Now I understand why some years had beautiful foliage but almost no flowers. Definitely leaving those leaves alone this year.

One thing I’ve noticed with houseplants is that most problems usually aren’t caused by a lack of fertilizer—they often come down to the basics: light, watering, airflow, soil, and simply giving the plant enough time to adjust. 🌱

Once you understand those five things, plant care becomes SO much less confusing.

I'm in 6b Ohio. I've grown peony for 65 years. I wait until September/early Oct. to cut back and transplant. NEVER cover the eyes of the crown. Too deep, they don't bloom. They can be mulched for the winter but be sure to uncover the crown in the spring and do it early before the shoots appear. Full Sun. If it gets too shady, the bloom will suffer and all you'll have is a green hedge. I use organic slow products like Espoma Flower-tone (3-4-5) in the spring. Do not apply to the crown, but about a foot around the plant. When transplanting, amend the soil with well rotted compost or leaf mold to help in obtaining critical minerals and nutrients. Most all the advice given is basic for more things than just peonies. Trees go by the same rules..mid August to mid September is a good time to transplant a small tree in my 6b.
My only complaint about these programs is the AI person, AI flowers, the whole AI layout. Call me old fashioned, but I would prefer a video with a real person showing their real gardens and their method of application.

Purchased a house in CO in the front range. Found an abandoned corner garden with a Shirley Temple peony struggling to live. Brought her back to bloom and added Bowl of Beauty, Peterson, Sarah Bernhart, and Kansas. In the 4th year now, the spring of 2026 was the most gorgeous display of their beauty. SO happy!

You just showed us the US state map and Missouri is MO. It is not MC. Thank you . I did not know information about dividing Peonies. I appreciate that.

Zone 6b. In my former home, we had a big, beautiful peony bush that never turned unsightly, but produced blooms every Spring.
