Araki giving Josuke Go Beyond and then basically smack away all the building catharsis for WoU’s defeat by going “No, still not strong enough to beat Calamity” felt like a genius subversion of JoJo tropes. But when the final blow to Tooru being a joint attack between Josuke and Yasuho, the first and strongest bond formed from the first pages of the part, made it so worth it.

Also a pretty good reference to the original universe’s Hirose being instrumental in stopping the antagonist right at the end.

oh this is incredible it's so rare to find someone who understands the deeper themes of Jojolion like you have here. i caught up with JJL as it was releasing right at chapter 99, and it's since become my favorite piece of art of all time, and Toru is my favorite character ever along with it, i have a wasp tattoo in his honor LMAO.

Jojolion is such a web of intersecting themes and ideas, i've had to reread countless times and write over 100 pages of notes just to wrap my head around them all, and of course Toru is the intersection of all of them. it's like that one chapter subtitle, "all events consolidate to this man". he represents the religious with his parallels to the Serpent and the Forbidden Fruit-- TG University Hospital's logo is even a snake!! he's Josuke's foil with identity, and contrasts with Yasuho's identity struggles. he mirrors and even pushes along the capitalist system in Morioh that's monopolized by the Higashikatas, a nepotistic family riding off of centuries old American money, and like the Higashikatas, he wrongfully believes that commercializing fruit will lead to personal happiness and freedom. he and the other rock humans even represent the misogyny that infests Morioh, it's the rock doctors that unconsensually experiment on Holy, Dr. Wu regularly assaults female patients, and Toru uses Yasuho sexually for the closest access possible to Paisley Park.

with all that said i think a lot of why Josuke ends up the hero with a family, and why Tooru and the rock humans fall and die is, like you said, not a duality of "good vs. evil", but rather one of "nature vs. nurture." neither Josuke nor the Rock Humans were born with any moral sway in their nature, but while Josuke was accepted into a family and met with care when Yasuho lifted him from the Wall Eyes, rock humans live their first 17 years in the heirarchical fiercly territorial social structure of hornets, then dropped into a town where working within the conformist, patriarchal rules equals monetary and status gain. their sacred land, the Devil's Palms, are also built on top of and effectively colonized by the Higashikatas, which Araki directly parallels with northern indigenous Japanese groups; the Emishi's subjugation and displacement is listed as a "curse" in chapter 1. this assimilation tactic fails for the rock humans though because as a disadvantaged species, trying to work within a system that was never made for them is a losing battle.

Toru's arc is perfect Greek tragedy, he's killed by Kaato and Yasuho, victims of the system he assimilated into for his own gain, and becomes a victim of that system in one fell swoop. i relate to him a lot as a black trans person myself, the fear of never fitting in or finding anyone unless i betray my morals and conform is real, and his arc helped me accept my fears and prosper in spite of them.

i could go on and on about JJL and it's so hard to keep it consice because one thematic thread immediately opens another massive thematic can of worms LOL. i firmly believe Jojolion is Araki's magnum opus no matter how many LARPERS say Toru is a bad villain he will forever be my goat
