“Take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder and sieve it through the finest sieve and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy. and yet... and yet you act as if there is some ideal order in the world, as if there is some... some rightness in the universe by which it may be judged.”
...
"You need to believe in things that aren't true. How else can they become?"
- Death, Hogfather (Terry Pratchett)

When I was a child, I found a softball sized rock shaped like an egg. I kept that rock for years, saying it was my dragon egg. I eventually buried it in the hill beneath the pepper tree by my house and said that it hatched into a dragon named Hawk that watched over our house.

I think about Hawk a lot, even as an adult all these years later. I like to think that he's still there, beneath the boughs of a pepper tree bigger than a house, resting and watching.

I remember as a little kid I believed in fairys so genuinely. My dad bought a little fairy in a jar toy, where the fairy would flutter around inside the jar. He pretended that he'd actually caught it, and that he was giving it to me. I believed it, and I would talk to it and carry it around like a little companion. I would go out and hunt for fairies, and I would build little houses for them to stay in. I believed in fairys so much when I was a kid that I would take any little out of ordinary things, and claim that it was a sign of a fairy.

The world stops being magical when you stop believing that it can be.

it reminds me of a quote i once heard talking about Irish culture "i don't believe in faeries....but i'll never let THEM (the faries) hear me say it!"

" I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realised that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand, a word you say, but I shall still be."

your affectionate Godfather,

C.S. Lewis"

I remember being about 9 years old, and asking my Mom what was the truth about Santa Claus. I'll never forget her kindness in how she explained it -- that Santa wasn't a person -- he didn't literally come down the chimmey on Christmas, but he was "real" in what he represented -- the spirit of Christmas. Of family, of togetherness, of generousity.

I'm still a little disappointed I didn't get to see his elves, which my Nana said only grownups could see. But Mom's explanation really did make me feel better. It was magic in its own way.

One person’s fairy, is another person’s god, is another person’s cryptid, is another person’s alien. The fair folk exist. Just not in forms you might expect.

Surprise they didn't bring up the movie Rise of the Guardians. I haven't read the books its based on but I've heard good things about it. (Spoilers for a 14 year old movie ahead but it's a good one) The main thing keeping the Guardians alive is children's belief. Pitch Black, the movies stand in for the boogeyman, tries to stop the Tooth fairy from collecting baby teeth and the Easter Bunny from giving out eggs. At one point they meet a young boy who believes in almost all of them and they are visible to him, except Jack Frost. This kid is the only child who believes in the Guardians near the climax of the film due to Pitch, but even his belief is fading.

Then Jack Frost makes it snow in his bedroom and he starts believing again and the Guardians survive, and then, oddly, Jack becomes visible to the boy. When the boys friends start believing in the Guardians again, Sandman comes back from the dead.

This movie (and the Guardians of Childhood books) are the epitome of this trope imo.

There Be Dragons isn't just about childhood belief. It's about neglect and self-esteem.

I used to feel so sure fairies were real. Now, I instead write stories about fairies, and while the book is open, the words come alive in my head. They're still real, but now, they only exist in another world.
