  For all of Diocletian&apos;s faults, one has to recognize that, in a way, he was professional. He got absolute power over the Empire and, rather than getting so drunk with power he&apos;d try to keep it all for himself, recognized he couldn&apos;t handle it all alone, split it in four, retired, and refused to return when, surprise surprise, it turns out that the rest DID want all the power for themselves.

  I really wish you would&apos;ve gone more in-depth on Probus (276-282), he doesn&apos;t get nearly enough recognition for completing Aurelian&apos;s legacy. Without Probus stabilising Rome&apos;s soft-power over the Germanic tribes, reintroducing viticulture to the empire after a two-hundred year ban, keeping Aurelian&apos;s economy alive and taking the unprecedented measure of employing the army in public works (including finishing the Aurelian walls, which Aurelian had left incomplete!), we would probably think of Aurelian, at best, as an overly ambitious general with unrealistic goals. It&apos;s good that Aurelian gets credit, but Probus should get his due as well.

  It’s worth mentioning that when Aurelian built those walls in Rome, the more important effect was that it sent a message of approval for all other cities to begin doing the same. This meant that frontier cities had much improved defensive structures, and forced barbarians to have to either learn how to siege, or go somewhere else. It also allowed for the Roman legions to have more time to respond to emergencies. It was a real revolution at the time and probably kept the empire alive longer than it should’ve been.
