My takeaway: Gabe admits what most of us won't, uses descriptive words most of us use, learns to use equipment the same way we do (users manual in desk drawer), gets the same results we do most of the time, has fun getting squiggly lines, has more patience than me trying to get stuff to work, has the best gadget videos on YouTube and he knows Alaska! Go Gabe!!

Please,please,please..... Do more on this. I've owned one for years... It looks nice on my shelf.... And I would love to learn how to use it but I gave up on the internet... You never net a complete starters guide... So I would be so happy if you started one. Love your work... ❤

"I've not figured out how oscilloscopes work." Yet he owns four of them.

Regarding the "Don't connect the scope to AC outlet" claims, that would be because the ground lead on a probe is connected to ground on the outlet, and if you accidentally connect the ground to the live... That's a bad time... See electroboom video for example.

Its refreshing hearing someone admit that they don't understand something, seems like a relatively rare quality. Oscilloscopes have eluded my comprehension for some time now as well lol. I like how your videos tend to drive people to not be afraid to tinker and discover.

Start with the basics. The key thing to understand is that an oscilloscope lets you display periodic signals: signals that repeat, like square waves, triangle waves, sinusoids, video frames, etc. The idea is that the scope's trigger circuit makes a sawtooth wave which controls the x-axis (sweep) on the tube. The trigger circuit needs to lock onto a repeating feature in the wave you are trying to measure. Think about this for a while, then look at the sweep knob and trigger controls, and it will start to make sense.

As an electrical engineer, scopes were an essential part of being able to do my job.

You will only realise the true value when capturing complicated periodic and transient signals using a digital storage oscilloscope (in the past special photographic adapters were used).

A scope can allow you to basically see inside a complicated circuit on timescales of seconds to nano-seconds, and can allow you to extract say circuit inductance, or detect a defective diode, or a whole host of other uses.
