In 1965  after working in a cotton mill and then drinking til late at night, we'd go to an all night diner called Friend's for breakfast. There was a recording studio down the street. James Brown and his group would show up there too. I have personally seen James Brown face-down asleep in his scrambled eggs. We ALL got along. Respect of hardworking men for hard working entertainers. It went both ways. 😊

Of all the Funk artists and bands throughout history, the greatest thing that can be said about James Brown is that he invented it. So, when you see James Brown, you're seeing a man create a style that everyone else has imitated ever since.

James Brown was one of the first concerts I went to when I was about 11 years old in 1970.

Seriously James Brown in his prime! His live at the Apollo album is LEGENDARY!  I asked my mother if she went to see him. She said no because the line was around the block. His association with the Apollo goes back decades to the point where people were able to view his body there. His association with that theater and the audience here is undeniable.  This is when funk was funk! The Godfather of Soul! Soul Brother Number One! When he was on Soul Train, he took over the whole show. The drummer is looking because if any member of the band made a mistake, they would get fined! He was a total performer and gave the people what they paid for. No one was funkier than James. It wasn't a block party until you put on James and Sly Stone.

I was lucky enough to see James Brown live when I was 19 in 2003.  He was an old man but was still dancing up a storm, we couldn't understand anything he said but he was still great.
