  I took my boys to their Boy Scout Troop Jamboree weekend of camping. &nbsp;We were to bring our own firewood. &nbsp;<br>The troop next to us brought treated lumber post pieces left over from a new fence one of the Dad’s built. They were actually going to cook with this wood. I told them the deadly chemicals pressed into that wood and they could actually die if they ingested it. A couple of the Dads in their Troop actually argued with me. Fortunately, we brought munch more wood than we needed and offered to give it to them. They agreed to take it and no treated wood was burned. The kids learned an important lesson that is not taught.

  I lived off grid in the Siskiyou Mountains for 7 years. Here&apos;s one for the book. If you buck up and split wood in the fall and you happen to have a big tree that is still green, IF you live where the temperature drops below freezing for 3 or 4 months, &nbsp;stack the gren wood at the back of your pile to burn it last. You will be able to burn it jyst fine after a couple of months of freezing. How? You will notice that after &nbsp;a long deep freeze the end of the rounds will ice up. It will continue to ice up until the wood is dry and does not ice up anymore &nbsp;This is because the wood actually freeze drys the moisture out of the rounds.

  Oh heaven. When I was in high school my classmates older sister wound up in hospital because some idiot decided to burn a big brush pile full of poison ivy. The wind shifted and blew the smoke it to where she was at a friend&apos;s house. She was really sick from it, vey scary. My French Canadian great uncles taught me to only burn natural wood, said only burn wood from the woods, not from the lumber yard. And my Dad did wood sculpture so he showed me how to really look at wood. Loved this video.

  I was taught to never burn spongy, moldy, or buggy wood in the house. You might use it in an outside fire, maybe, but never inside. And anything that threw black smoke or foul odor was a danger and was to be gotten out immediately. Also, I was taught to never burn painted or varnished wood.

  55 years burning firewood. Love the heat, hate the mess, thankful for the work. My father is 88 years old and still takes care of his own firewood. If you stop you die is his saying. Good video. Thanks.

  I worked for a builder who moved to my country from South Africa when I was around 15 and he had me painting the stumps under a house with creosote. He told me it was harmless and so I was slapping it around without a care until it started to burn my face. Now day&apos;s if I go out in the sun for more than five minutes without the right hat and so forth to cover me I get a really savage rash from it. Creosote is really not something to take lightly.

  I did not grow up with a fireplace or wood stove. What I&apos;ve learned today is knowledge for a lifetime. I never knew there was so much to know in &nbsp;how to understand a piece of wood. Thank you for your life saving skills.
