  My father served in the LRRP, the most elite unit of the Sri Lankan Special Forces, and was present in every major battle. He survived the war, but I still remember the anxious times my mother and I endured, not hearing from him for weeks. Every time he left the house, we feared it might be the last time we'd see him. I'm so grateful the war is over now. I don't believe there's any discrimination against Tamils anymore; in fact, I have many Tamil friends who are like family to me.

  My uncle fought the Tigers during his service as a sniper in the SLA. He kept a Cynide capsule he pocketed from a dead Tiger commander he killed as a souvenir. Though they were the enemy he respected them for being a formidable and dedicated enemy towards the end.

  I used to work with an Indian guy in London, previously he had been a captain in the Indian Army, he showed me where he caught a bullet in the ankle fighting in Sir Lanka which ended his military career.

  Fun fact :- Before the LTTE dominated the north , there were few smaller organizations like TELO ,PLOTE . The TELO organization led a small scale navel attack to the Maldives and attacked the presidential palace forcing the Maldivian president to flee the office and stay hidden until the Indian military came to resque him which is known as operation Cactus.

  There was a time parents would not travel together in public transport like trains and busses. Because if they get bombed, children would not loose both parents. Specially in capital. That was how common these bombings were. At later stages of the war, hundrads of civilans lost their lives due to these bombings.

  Even after the war, the inhumane killing against the Tamils continued for the sake of ethnic cleansing. Many Tamils left the nation and now live in other countries. The Sri Lankan government never agreed to UN intervention and the investigation of war crimes against the Tamils. It speaks volumes on what happened.

  My Farther served in Navy for 22 years since 1996.He still talks about the Attacks on Naval Dockyards and Muthur. Every Sri Lankan suffered a lot during the war.He has many tamil  friends in Jaffna and Trinco❤

  My dad fought in the Lankan Wars as part of the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) in the Assam Regiment. His stories about Lanka was wild. The only enemy to gave him a scare.

  I was there myself in June 2009, I was one of only of small amount of Westerners that was allowed into the country at that point because my friend’s father worked for the WHO. I spent three weeks there that summer and it was a pretty surreal experience, there was military presence all over the country and Colombo. Victory posters all over the place. It was a very heavily militarized vibe and we weren’t allowed to go to the north or the east of the country. It was highly off-limits. You could feel the tension in the air, just an unbelievable time and experience as an 18-year-old kid, you could feel that something really really heavy had just taken place.
