This is one of my favorite examples of how a songwriter wrote a very good song, but then Elvis came along and put the "Elvis effect" on it. It's unbelievable how he could put his own spin, both vocally and musically, to a song and make it completely his. The paper in his hand were the song lyrics. There is a video where Elvis is very nervous about this song and continually flubs the lyrics, so Elvis' friend on stage, Charlie Hodge (the guy who plays guitar and sings harmony with Elvis) brought the lyrics just in case. Good thing he did! And the Elvis stance at that one part where he's just making the audience wait. OMG, classic Elvis dynamics.

The story goes that this was the first time Elvis had performed this song (originally sung by BJ Thomas) and Elvis was afraid he might forget the lyrics. But as usual he was Brilliant💓

Elvis was checking the lyrics. There's rehearsal footage of him struggling to remember the first verse of the song as he hadn't performed it before. He was always very nervous before going on stage and according to the man himself, it usually lasted through the first 3 songs or more; hence, he's holding the lyrics sheet 'just in case.' The rehearsal also shows Elvis directing the girls on when to come in; it's here on you tube somewhere.

Elvis introduced this song by saying: “BJ Thomas has out a new song. I don’t particularly like it, but I’m gonna do it for you anyway”. More of Elvis’ sense of humor. He and BJ Thomas we’re friends.
