fun fact: while filming the director didn't want the child actor on set when the mom was supposed to be yelling at him. They had a stand in and they would do the scenes together and she could go as hard as she wanted. when it was the child's turn, she would say her lines calmly, or it would be slightly different from the original. Because of how real the abuse was directed it makes sense, a child doesn't need to be threatened with a knife just for a movie.

Sam saying "I know you don't love me, the babadook won't let you" is devastating every time 🥺

I love the final metaphor of her feeding, comforting, and tending to the Babadook at the end: she's accepted that she can't simply get RID of her grief: she can only care for it, make peace with it, and learn to be less afraid of it.

Something that struck me about this movie is you remember the kid being annoying throughout...then when you rewatch it, he gets that medicine that calms him down 30 minutes in, and yet the situation NOSEDIVES immediately after. Because the kid wasn't the main issue, he was a distraction from the main issue, so when he's no longer acting up, she's got nothing to distract her from what's really eating away at her.

You can't get rid of the Babadook. You can never get rid of trauma or grief. You can either learn to live with it, or choose not to live at all.

Her being a children's book author, having dark stains on her hands (it wasn't the grill), and vomiting ink near the end all tells me she did indeed make the book herself as the first step in her descent into the madness of her grief. Good movie.

Every time I see him stroking her cheek whilst she choking him I weep like a baby. My mum died when I was 11 and it made my grandma a hard bitter woman. The babadook really resonates with me.

Essie Davis was ROBBED of an Oscar nomination for this! Genuinely one of the most compelling performances I’ve ever seen.

When you exclaimed "puppy!" I thought, oh, don't get too attached.

I have never done a 180 on a character like I have with this kid. Because he is the absolute WORST in the beginning, but just after the halfway point, I felt so bad for him. All the kid ever needed was true parental guidance and maybe some meds, and he was perfectly fine. Essie Davis's performance here is up there with Toni Colette's performance in Hereditary. She is incredible in this role. Truthfully, I still get the creeps from The Babadook.

The book didn't choose us. The mother created the book. The Babadook was a manifestation of her grief, something she carried within her that was growing stronger and stronger because she wasn't letting it out, wasn't letting herself actually acknowledge it and grieve. She couldn't heal because of that. That's why the Babadook is still there, in the basement in the end. Because grief and trauma doesn't go away when you're finally confronting it. It's still the monster that lives within you, within your house and the shadows of yourself and your home - but you gain a sort of power over it.

That's one of the reasons why I latched onto the Babadook as a queer icon. Something true kept hidden - but always there. The pressure of the closet, of society. People expecting you to be one way, to live your life a certain way... I can empathise with that. Hiding in the closest, feeling all that pressure, and finally opening that door and coming out. It's a lot. And there's some grief and fear and pain that lingers afterwards - because I have to accept there's a me that never existed, accept that there are people who won't understand, etc.

At it's core, the story is about a mother and wife's grief that near destroyed everything she held dear before she finally was able to confront, to name, and to start living with... but I can empathise with it, ya know?

It's a great movie. Fabulous job.

That being said, owning a copy of the book is perfectly safe. It wasn't the book that caused everything. It was her grief that she couldn't confront until her own broken mind, broken heart forced her to.
