I think my uncle described it well. The Godfather is how the mafia wanted to be seen. Goodfellas is how they actually were.

I love how Henry hill tries to pretend like he is normal now and all the guys he hung out with were psychos.

It's incredible how much of the supporting cast of Goodfellas ended up being the main cast of The Sopranos.

The thing I love about Goodfellas is how well Ray, Joe, and Robert play off each other. It feels like a genuine group of friends, but that's all a facade. They may like each other but all that joking and playing around is just to pass the time. They'd eat each other alive if it was in their interest

Henry definitely had a tendency to paint himself as some type of low-key victim to excuse himself for his bad behavior.

Fun fact, after watching Goodfellas you cannot read Wiseguy without hearing Ray Liotta's voice.  Great book, brilliant film and a terrific review.

When De Niro gets upset after Tommy is killed  is some of the best acting i have ever seen.

The casting of young Henry is just astounding. So much like Ray Liotta

Joe Pesci is at his heart a comedian. 100% that rap song is a comedy bit, just goes to show how good of an actor he is as well

Henry Hill was hardly the saint he wanted to be seen as, or is even portrayed in this video essay... just listen to the part where he's describing how Paul beats that woman up with a baseball bat. He cracks up and starts laughing, catches himself, and promptly corrects himself. He enjoyed the life.

Rest in Peace Ray Liotta, he brought an amazing sense of realism to his roles, was a really cool and talented guy.
