This incredible video details how ingenious Allied engineers laid a secret underwater pipeline to fuel the Normandy invasion.

“The Germans asked how long an army could survive without a port. The British asked whether the sea itself could carry the fuel.” That contrast is what makes Operation PLUTO so fascinating. It wasn’t the miracle that won Normandy, but it showed how unconventional engineering could create an answer traditional military doctrine never anticipated. Which impressed you more: Hartley adapting submarine-cable technology or the massive hidden pipeline network eventually carrying fuel beneath the Channel?

I have a photo of HMS Bustler and HMS Growler, two North Atlantic rescue tugs, with the huge reels on the back, laying the cable to France. This and Mulberry Harbours were pure genius.

Ironically, this exactly the same thing is now taking place in the middle east.

Shame that the AI could not differentiate between lead and "leed."

In this documentary I saw a photograph of a piece of PLUTO nestled along the side of a path. I remembered seeing it during a holiday visit in 1966 only in those days the pipe and the path ran along the walls of the then Blackgang Chine, It was around six to eight feet wide with a stout steel railing on the right side guarding the public from a precipitous drop down into the stream below, on reflection it may not have been so steep but at nine years old, things tend to look bigger and steeper. What I do remember is that the path was overhung by tree branches that almost met in the middle with the trees on the other side of the chine. This formed a natural green tunnel that lead from the cliff top car park down to the edge of the sea. Near the bottom of the walk, there was a plaque sited next to a stopcock that detailed what PLUTO was and how it helped win the war. The enamel was chipped and the cast iron plaque(National Trust I think) was showing signs of rust showing it's age and the signs of the cliff erosion that was starting to manifest in the gorge. It was in fact the reason I could not descend to the beach as the path had been roped off and posted with a sign that stated that indicated that rock falls caused the closure. Having looked a Google maps satellite photos of Blackgang Chine I have confirmed to myself that this little part of my past has been worn away by time and geology and it is with sadness that this place only exists know in my recollections and the memories of the other visitors there on that day. At least, here on this comment, a little part of my life will still exist after I pass.
