First, great video on design for manufacturing. And up until the end of the video where you talk about build in place assemblies, I thought this would be a good video for my classes. I have been an engineering educator for more than 25 years and one thing I always stress to students is that the key to good communication is proper terminology. You are NOT building in TOLERANCES for this twisting assembly in your example build. These are CLEARANCES. A tolerance is an allowable over/under-sizing or misplacement, or variance, of feature size and location, while maintaining part functionality in an assembly. (Like the hole size or location for a bolt that can be off a little and still work.) This is usually to account for tooling or machining variability (often tooling wear) during manufacturing. But you are talking about clearances, or the space needed to place/use parts in an assembly, or the amount of room needed between parts to work correctly. They are related terms, but NOT interchangeable. You present very well and your information is solid, which I suspect comes from years of design experience. (I started designing for 3D printing in 2003.) But you really need to get this correct as I'd hope you'd want to. So please, help in stopping the propagation of this incorrect and unfortunately common communication mistake.

I would wager that if the cad has specific dimensions and a consumer level machine can produce accuracy, a business should be able to meet the same quality. If the business can't, then obviously, the option for production ends up buying more consumer level printers and doing it yourself. While it is advantageous to farm work out, increasingly in professional manufacturing, the care for what is made is clouded by volume and cost rather than quality or accuracy. I see this in everything from CNC, woodworking, electronics, food, pretty much everywhere in manufacturing the quality has succumbed to "least possible to get away with it". This has led me to make my own rather than trust a service.

I'm here after two weeks to say thanks for the video. I made quick release clamp that can be printed without supports and is very beautiful and strong in any direction. Had to account for proportions and some angles were correlated in proportions to diameter of the cilindrical features. Took me 2 weeks because of maths involved. But finally i made it. Soon i want to sell model or launch a product after some load testing. Just thank you.
