  My grandparents kept a key in the newel post.  It was to unlock the the chute under the front porch where the coal was delivered.

  Wood ashes are organic fertilizer NOT &quot;pesticide&quot;.<br><br> The Roman Empire was in Europe &amp; extended Westward to the British Isles &amp; Eastward to modern day Turkey. There were NO &quot;&quot;ancient Roman baths&quot; across the Atlantic Ocean in North America.<br><br> Those scales are NOT the type that would be used in a General (Grocery) Store.<br><br> A Dry Well was for GRAY water from the kitchen sink mainly &amp; possibly other sinks &amp; the bathtub. You would NOT want sewer water leaching into the ground near your house foundation.

  The gravity furnace has me questioning it. I grew up in a house with this. We called it a floor furnace. Because the furnace was right under there and the heat came up through the grate, We had an old baby play pen we put around it so us kids wouldn&apos;t accidentally get burned from stepping on it or falling on it. Maybe just a different name.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPbJ2DXtQEs&amp;t=144">2:24</a> to add to this. &nbsp;Those are ‘double swing’ door hinges, that door opens both directions. &nbsp;Two at the top helped with the weight of a solid wood door. &nbsp;Would have another set of single double hinge lower. &nbsp;Instead of a standard door hinge opening like a ‘L’ these open like a ‘Z’
