Maybe that’s what he was subconsciously seeking all along…. To be with his mother.

That Jim guy did have a knack for child endangerment. Grooming his future wife, Allison, who was 16 when she met him. And taking a 4 and 6 year old to K2, the same mountain that had claimed the life of their mother? There's a reason parents must be parents in terms of setting boundaries to ensure their kids safety, because children aren't mature enough to be able to reflect over the possible consequences or risks behind what they wish for.

Poor kid. His whole life he was trying to find closeness to his parents that he never had.

I'm so glad to read the comments. I find it terribly irresponsible to do things like this with young children. They endangered themselves and their children way past the point of fun and adventure.

It almost seems as if Tom was just a lost little boy, trying desperately to fill up an emptiness inside of him. RIP Tom and Allison

I discovered your channel while doing research for a college paper about the Sherpa-mountaineer social contract (specifically between Norgay and Hillary in their summit of Everest). Since I found your channel mountaineering has really captured my imagination. I’ve seen many channels glorify and sensationalize the many deaths in mountaineering, but I always found your channel to be very responsible with the way you speak about these moments. Thank you for making such thoughtful and extensively researched videos!

What a sad and lonely life Tom and Kate's parents gave them. Continually abandoned or drug along like luggage. Its heartbreaking that Tom carried a loneliness within that no mountain could ever fill. Prayers that Kate has found fulfillment, love and a family to build a life with

Jim was determined enough to exploit the situation for money. And the moment he told his daughter that her brother was dead, wow, why on earth would you let cameras film that? Probably the most traumatic event of her adult life and he’s just so cold 😢

Still watching, but I have a hard time understanding the purpose of taking VERY young children, who are reliant on their parents for protection, to such unforgiving and dangerous places. There are plenty of ways to instill a sense of adventure, drive, and wonder for the natural world in safer places. The TV crew and press is really quite telling. Also I don’t think a 6 and 4 year old have the capability for SUCH introspection that they simply must look upon the great mountain their mother died on at that age.

I got emotional when Kate reunited with the person that carried her 25 years prior. For some reason that was the only emotional bond that I felt from this story(and the people involved)
