Met him while going back and forth from the stable to his lodge on my horse, he mentions monsters and says to beware cause there are monsters in the ruins of houses (I play with the italian version so the text may vary slightly due to translations) and to be fair some stal monsters spawn where his lodge used to be. He doesnt mention his house otherwise and when he comes to the stable he turns around on his horse and goes back upward the mountain!

  Regarding the goddess statue in the forgotten temple, while you discover it fallen over in totk, it gives you a side quest to visit the springs of wisdom power and courage, where the smaller statues request a dragon part be offered to the spring. Doing all 3 will return the large statue upright while still keeping access to the secret rooms behind it
