Gladys was there to heal her illness by feeding on other people's life force.  First she tried feeding on his parents, but it wasn't enough.  So she used Alex to gain access to a larger group of younger people, and was feeding off of them.  That's why her hair had started to grow back thicker in the final scene, and why her wrinkles were less intense.<br><br>The movie gives the clues to her motivations, it just doesn't spell it out for the audience.  We're sort of meant to be in the same feeling as all the characters: trying to make sense of horrific and insane events with only bits and pieces of information - because unlike a lot of movies, the villain never gives a big dramatic monologue to explain all her plans, backstory, and motivations.

watching this in a packed cinema was CRAZY, when the car door opened everyone shrieked and by the end it was just an absolute blast 😌😅

So a bit of clarity about Gladys’ magic - she was consuming Alex’s parents to try to regain her strength / youth / life force and when that didn’t work, she started eating the students. Meanwhile, she uses someone’s hair to make them a target of her ‘weapons’ (the entranced people) when she needs them for that. But ultimately, classic witch behavior of eating people for endless life.<br><br>Fun side note, they mention that Alex’s mother has never met this Aunt so in truth Gladys probably just found someone to feed off of (like the parasites mentioned throughout)

I agree with the film theory that Gladys is likely not really related to Alex & his family. Alex's parents stated that they haven't seen her in 15 years & that she is the sister of Alex's maternal grandmother. Gladys tells principal Marcus that Alex's mom is her baby sister. Then she tells Alex that she hasn't seen him since he was a baby. Too many inconsistencies. I also agree with the film theory that Gladys might be much older than what she presents herself to be. The fact that she used the term "consumption" instead of "tuberculosis" implies that she's been around since the 1800s

The director actually modeled the way they run after the infamous photo of nine year old Phan Thị Kim Phúc covered in napalm during the Vietnam War since the photo haunted him so much.

The floating rifle is cuz it's a dream and weird stuff happens in dreams but ALSO it's a commentary on school shootings, how justine said "we're the only ones left"  the shot of the empty classroom cept for one student survivor. Also her motive was that she was dying and needed to suck life force
