  Webmaster here, dev, responsible for about 500 domains across 3 agencies. I put this on 10 sites, initially our server costs increased, but eventually they all decreased load by ~35% the only possible conclusion I can arrive at is: the AI scrapers realized we were fighting back and stopped scraping our sites.

  The fact that someone could see this as illegal activity just means we all understand that when we&apos;re getting beaten by someone with lots of money, they might sue us for hurting their fists when shielding ourselves with our arms.

  This should not be viewed as some &quot;dark hacking&quot; stuff, it should be more normalized like ad blocks are, it&apos;s just a tool for defense against malicious corporations that sees us as products

  The moment you mentioned the AI scrapers ignoring the robots.txt file, that was the moment that fully flipped me. I wouldn&apos;t call putting an endless well on your website to be malicious: It is a passive aggressive way to fight back the AI companies passive aggressively ignoring your terms and conditions for using the website. They don&apos;t have the right to ignore the end user agreement that we&apos;re forced to.

  CloudFlare actually recently rolled out an AI tarpin feature of their own. The main difference is that the official Cloudflare tarpit actually uses gen AI to create the pages, meaning that in that case the AI is just being fed AI slop.

  The thing that gets me every time when we talk about how AI companies &quot;acquire&quot; their data, is that if they didn&apos;t steal it, these models would be even less able to make a profit. Any time an AI company complains about these efforts to stop them in their theft, they have to skirt around what they&apos;re doing. Those complaints of &quot;abuse&quot; (Sam Altman, OpenAI) that they claim just skate past all the copyright infringement they are doing.

  As a carnivorous plant enthusiast, I&apos;d say &quot;Darlingtonia&quot; is a better name than &quot;Nepenthes&quot; since it actually uses light and internal plant structures to lure in and trap insects. Thanks for the video! 😁
