  &quot;These guys are brilliant until touching on topics I know about&quot; is something I noticed on general interest podcasts over a decade ago. They are presented with such confidence and/or personality that it masks the writer&apos;s/researcher&apos;s experience level with the topic. Two semi-professional comedians and a researcher can&apos;t tackle new-to-them subject every week without some holes in their understanding yet you won&apos;t notice because you have the same holes in yours. AI seems to be mimicking this part of humanity.

  There was a funny podcast about university librarians getting really confused by students constantly asking them to help find papers that didn&apos;t exist. It turned out the AI Chatbots were just making up sources. I even had it myself when I asked it to suggest some sources to get an overview of a topic. A full title, author, year and abstract for six papers that were completely made up.

  I remember reading a white-paper in the 90&apos;s where the author said the danger of the rising internet was; since anyone can declare themselves an expert on any topic, the true experts&apos; voices are drowned out. His chief concern was &quot;the overall quality of information will degrade into an endless forest of mediocrity&quot;. Boy, how optimistic that statement looks in hindsight.

  I&apos;m a self-published author and I&apos;ve been writing novels and stories since 2011. The paid reviews were a big problem even back in the early days and now they totally dominate. <br> <br>Every time I publish a new novel I get inundated with services wanting me to pay for reviews but don&apos;t worry, they tell me, it&apos;s all within Amazon&apos;s guidelines. <br> <br>Don&apos;t even get me started on AI written stories and novels drowning out our hard work.

  Eventually we’ll decide that there’s just no reliable means of doing online research, and we’ll be teaching kids the Dewy Decimal System again.

  I was so glad when googles AI tried to tell one of my elementary school students that the island she was researching didn&apos;t exist. She may have misread it but I was glad to use it as a teaching opportunity for the fact that AI hallucinates.
