Fred would probably be very humbled by all this attention. He'd probably be embarrased by it all ... Thank you for reviving an old favourite in mine and my husbands hearts.

Daniel looks mesmerized by Fred - hanging on every word, a construction worker with plenty of experience will appreciate the work that steeplejacks do, sometimes I can't bear to watch when he's on top of a smokestack with his hammer & chisel, knocking it down brick by brick

I work with an uncle who’s similar/reminds me of Fred. He’s still living in the old times, The only form of technology he has is a Nokia from the 90’s. He doesn’t have the internet, his life is just working but he loves it. I aspire to be like that. He just lives in the moment

I think you guys would enjoy a 4-episode TV series from 2000 called "Longitude". It's about the creation of the first chronometer, which was an absolute revolution in sea navigation. It has all the elements you seem to enjoy, pioneering engineering, fascinating mechanisms, problem solving in a new field, and revealing the story behind things we just take completely for granted. Not only great content for the channel, but an important story to get out there so it's not forgotten.

Fascinating stuff. My father was a patternmaker, a skilled job having a long apprenticeship. In fact he was never called up for military service during WW2, as he was considered to be of more value pattern making than being in the army. I remember his collection of two-foot long steel rules, each slightly different depending on the metal that the pattern was for.

In the UK there is a Land Fill Tax of around £100 per tonne. So the furniture factory would be happy to give away the wood scrap instead.

While there are still foundries and there always will be, there will be a need for patternmakers, there are alternatives and 3D printing is one, it is not durable enough for large runs, wooden patterns are still the preferred. For long mechanated casting, as for car engine blocks metal patterns are used. Regarless of the medium, it still requires a Pattern Maker. Eood waste no longer goes into land fill sites in the UK, it is pelleted and burned in ex coal fired powerstations, or pirpose built small scale power stations, this guy just did it first!
