I worked in a San Jose/Santa Clara production detail shop in 1969, 70 , 71. We sometimes did over 30 cars / a day in July and August .Dealers paid $ 27.50 per car .We Steam cleaned the engine compartment, the door jambs and the tires and repainted the engine with correct colors, radiator and wheel wells with bulk black and clear coated everything making brittle hoses and wires look fresh . We shampooed the interior using big wet/dry vacuums and coated the tires , dash board and vinyl tops and pedal pads with a shiny coat clear coating .We removed the road tar and then washed the exterior.Cut the paint with 3,000 rpm black and deckker buffers and then waxed them . Then cleaned the chrome with 000 steel wool and washed the windows with steel wool and a towel soaked in laquor thinner and rinsed a bit with water. No smears! We parked them outside for a few hours and then delivered them to the dealers. Profit margin was tight for the owner and they shed employees as winter came along. Some cars were easy ,some were complete pigs and the workers would simply steam clean the interior and leave the car opened up to the sunshine for a couple of days and got great results. I then went to college!
