  What's a bit amusing is that, although St. Petersburg is known as 'the Venice of the north', and for good reason, I don't believe it has anywhere near the flooding issues of Venice.

  From what I know seems pretty objective. One thing.. about Catherine.. seems to be overkill amount of mention of how she was a former laundry maid, but nothing at all about how she was truly his best friend. Contemporaries wondered what he saw in her as a woman, but there is evidence of their deep affection in letters that he wrote to her on his travels, for example, if i remember correctly, where he while admiring many things about the west praised the unique aspects of Russia that he saw as superior and that Russia should never abandon its spirituality for that of the west. Which kind of makes sense in light of the unique objectivity that was probably the most powerful aspect of his genius. On the one hand he carefully (though ruthlessly) and surgically cut out what was not essential as he saw it, perhaps that which was more the product of superstition and pointless tradition rather than the pillars of spiritual truth, but did this in order to put the nation into a state in which it could actually preserve and safe keep through ages to come those superior qualities it had that actually mattered, and ironically most importantly the Orthodox faith. I know this is controversial, but perhaps one way of viewing it .. since there is no way to know for sure what WOULD have been anyway.

  A brilliant human being. The ironies are numerous.  Like Communist Mao, Tzar Peter correctly knew, above all else that ..... everybody had to be on the same page....by any means....or his Westernization mission would fail. Dissension could not be tolerated. He was a born king, who contemptuously and violently opposed the royal/god system that gave him his power. Peter was a progressive who created a meritorious system of dictatorship as Confucius suggested, and the Chinese have today. He respected education and the potential of the  individual. You could rise on your merit no matter who you were. Peter was a genius on many levels. Among the most remarkable people ever.
