My dad coached in the NFL for 40 years. 15 with your Bengals. Although not a head coach the assistant coaches also go through it. I could tell you stories.

Mike Holmgren had a similar philosophy to Noll. He wanted his coaches as home for dinner every night. His mindset was "we're professionals, and if we can't figure out how to win a football game in 40 hours, we need to find something else to do." McVay is right. If you have to put in that many hours, you aren't very good at your job. You're being dumb. Work smarter, not harder.

Bud Grant and Bruce Arians are also great examples of balanced coaches.

Bud Grant would always come home for dinner. He even would go hunting the day before a playoff game.

Bruce Arians told his coaches “if you miss a practice or recital, I’ll fire you”.

NFL coach who balanced things: Bud Grant. He would work fairly normal hours. Not normal NFL hours, normal human being hours. He died in his 90s. And by all accounts a very nice, level-headed guy.

I’ve been self employed, for the past nine years (since Summer 2015).
I once would talk big to others, about working 16- 18 hour days— citing how much money that I made that day— thinking it was a flex.
I’ll be 42, next week:
And man….. was I a dummy.
Even these days (with fitness training and fitness coaching being priorities in my life),
my lady will occasionally remind me about the need for rest.

Thank you, Flemlo, for this gem of a video.
Blessings to you and yours. Rest up, Brother.

My father was one of those guys. He worked like a dog his entire life running 16 hour shifts. As a black man raising a family in the '60s, he never stopped grinding. He ate so much crap at work. On the rare occasions we'd see him, he'd fight with my mom. He was always making promises to us that he couldn't possibly keep. "This weekend we'll load up and go for a picnic. One day we'll move out of the ghetto and into a big house." It would drive my mom crazy. "Don't make promises to these kids if you can't keep them," she would tell him. It made him mad to think she didn't believe in him but she was right. We would much rather have just had him around. I swore that I would never be like him. That the constant struggle for the all mighty dollar just wasn't worth it. And for a while I lived that life. I worked hard when I was at work but when the whistle blew I put work behind me. I played sports, worked out, got plenty of sleep, traveled, enjoyed my family. I had it all...but at 35, I was flat broke with tons of credit card and student loan debt. I knew that I had to turn it up. I took on a much more demanding job that required all of my time. I was going from 7am to 10pm sometimes seven days a week. It paid off financially. I paid off my debt, bought a house and two new cars. I was able to lavish my family with expensive gifts...but I was run down. I had to put aside all the things and people I loved to maintain this. My job required constant travel (10 months a year). I would wake up in the middle of the night and not remember wear I was. Was I at home or in a hotel? What city was I in again? On the rare times I wasn't traveling I would sit in my living room and just stare at the wall, just to feel the ground under my feet. I was so miserable and angry. I finally quit and as predicted, the ground dropped out financially. I had to get back on that wheel. This is what capitalism does to us. We can never stop. Most of us aren't lucky enough to work for the love of our jobs. We do it because if we don't, they shut off the heat and evict you. It's a never ending hampster wheel and there is no escape. Everytime I think about quitting I remind myself that there is nothing more tragic than a homeless black man roaming the streets with nowhere to go. Then I drag my fat ass out of bed and I go back to grinding. That's just life in America.

You either produce results or don’t have a job….on top of that pressure think of all the meetings, recruiting, travel all while having a family.
