Tokyo’s train system looks complicated — but you only need to understand a few key things: the main train lines, train types, and how to use an IC card.

▶ See how to take your first Tokyo train, from the airport to your hotel, step by step:
https://travelsmartjapan.s.gy/tokyo-train-system

I would recommend using the local buses not only to travelers who have been to Tokyo many times, but also to first-time visitors.
You can enjoy the changing cityscape, and there are no stairs, so it's easy to get on and off.
Each operator sells one-day passes. Give it a try!

Those watching this helpful video are doing good work regarding travel research! Couple of things I'll emphasize: Google Maps will tell you the platform, time, what the train will say on its sign and has been foolproof for me during two extended trips. Above the doors inside the trains are sign that tell you the next station. Both platform signs and these signs go back and forth between Japanese and English. Very important is train manners in Japan, line up neatly on station platforms like they do and do not talk loudly on trains, don't put your bag on an empty seat, try not to overpack for Japan as nothing is really designed for a family of five trying to move eight large suitcases around. Pay attention to what Google Maps tells you about station exits, Shinjuku station has 200 exits and is so large it has its own tourist info desks just for the station. Be ready in advance for tapping your card before the fare gates and make sure you tap out when you are supposed to, especially doing line transfers at stations along your route.

Don't worry, it's confusing even for Japanese. Hence, there's always attendants at train stations to help people.
