6 Fun Used Cars That Won’t Lose You Money

What if you could buy a genuinely fun car, enjoy it for five years, and sell it for almost what you paid? That's the idea behind this list. We're breaking down 6 categories of fun used cars that come surprisingly close to being "free to own" not because they cost nothing, but because low depreciation, inexpensive parts, strong enthusiast communities, and proven mechanicals can dramatically reduce the real cost of ownership. These are the kinds of cars you can actually enjoy driving without taking the massive depreciation hit that comes with buying a newer performance car. We're covering the C6 Corvette, S197 Mustang, third-generation Dodge Viper, Honda S2000, NC Mazda Miata, Toyota SW20 MR2, Mk IV Toyota Supra, TJ Jeep Wrangler, and Lexus GX470. You'll discover: • Fun used cars that hold their value • Cheap performance cars to own • Used cars with low depreciation • Cars that won't lose much money • Affordable enthusiast cars • Fun cars that are cheap to maintain • Cars you can buy and resell without a huge loss • Best used sports cars for enthusiasts • Cheap cars with strong resale value • Reliable performance cars • Classic cars that are still usable • Affordable Japanese sports cars • Cheap American performance cars • Used off-roaders that hold their value • Cars that can be almost "free to own" The C6 Corvette and S197 Mustang show why choosing the right generation matters. Their massive parts supply, low repair costs, and enormous DIY communities can make ownership dramatically easier than with newer performance cars. The third-generation Dodge Viper takes that idea into a much more exotic category, while still benefiting from relatively accessible Chrysler components and long-term enthusiast demand. The Honda S2000 brings high-revving rear-wheel-drive fun with an enormous owner community and strong resale values. The NC-generation Mazda Miata is another overlooked option, offering a newer platform than the oldest NAs and NBs without the active depreciation curve of newer cars. Then we get into the Toyota duo: the SW20 MR2 and Mk IV Supra. The Supra in particular has already gone through its massive appreciation cycle and, according to the story behind this video, has reached a point where values can remain relatively stable while the legendary 2JZ provides huge mechanical and aftermarket support. Finally, the TJ Jeep Wrangler and Lexus GX470 prove that this concept isn't limited to sports cars. Both offer strong enthusiast demand, proven mechanicals, and the potential to retain much of their purchase price when properly maintained. But there's an important catch: The cheapest example isn't necessarily the smartest buy. A neglected Corvette, worn-out Viper, abused S2000, rusty Wrangler, or poorly maintained GX470 can turn a supposedly low-cost car into a repair bill nightmare. The formula is simple: buy the right car, buy the right example, maintain it properly, and avoid paying a premium for a car that's already been heavily modified or neglected. Which one would you choose? C6 Corvette, S197 Mustang, Viper, S2000, NC Miata, MR2, Supra, TJ Wrangler, or GX470? Drop your pick in the comments.
