When I was in 4 th or 5th grade we were learning about volanoes and earthquakes, and my teacher told us about an earthquake so powerful it made the Mississippi River run backwards. The following Sunday in Bible School I asked the teacher if God used an earthquake to part the Red Sea. Well, he got furious and scolded me for daring to question God, and then tossed me out to ponder my blasphemy. He also called my mom, but instead of agreeing she defended me. "She's not saying God didn't do it, she's asking HOW He dud it.,"

They taught us 'show and tell' in grade school so we would know the difference, showing that something is true, is a lot different than telling something is true, so if you have to "believe" something is true, chances are, it's not.

Couldn't God just grow hair on Elisha's head instead of killing the children?

I didn’t have a religious indoctrination growing up. So I first encountered the Eden story as a young adult in college. At the time, , it seemed like a perfectly good mythology to explain good and evil. I never took it literally. Later though, I was actually shocked to learn the Christians actually take the story literally. It was like one of those “ wow” moments, “ seriously”?
