  Personally, my fave anecdote about Henry is the treatment he got from other monarchs, rulers, across Europe, they simply refused to acknowledge that he was king, he remained “Henry of Bolingbroke” as the offing of your cousin, anointed and crowned, was rather distasteful to their sense of self-preservation. His sons, including Henry of Monmouth, who were all adults, were keenly aware of the slight their their glorious father’s right to usurp the throne, toss cousin into bowels of Pontefract, and would restart the French wars (ie Agincourt) not from a desire to warmonger (well, perhaps a bit) but mostly to wipe away the stain of father Henry’s shame. If you ever get a chance to interview Ian Mortimer do so, he has perhaps the most sympathetic biography of H4 that I have found.

  Henry IV is arguably my favorite English king. He’s unbelievably under appreciated. My others are Henry II, Edward III, Edward I, and cliche as it is, Henry V. I often wonder what his reign would’ve looked like if he wasn’t consumed by civil unrest throughout the kingdom and had the opportunity to sail at the head of an army across the channel.
