Blind Beggar to Brink's-Mat: How London Fought Back | Underworld Histories | S2 E4

From the Krays at the Blind Beggar to the Brink's-Mat gold haul, this episode tracks London's gang wars and the tactics that finally shut them down. Underworld Histories dives into the 1960s turf war between the East End Kray twins and South London's Richardson brothers. We revisit Mr. Smith's pub on March 8, 1966, where a barroom clash leaves Dickie Hart dying and ignites a cycle of retribution. The next night at 8:30 p.m., Ronnie Kray walks into the Blind Beggar and shoots George Cornell in front of witnesses who refuse to talk. While fear shields the Krays, the Richardsons are undone when their own men testify about torture, landing Frankie Fraser 10 years and Charlie Richardson 25. Inside the Firm, paranoia turns lethal. Frank Mitchell is sprung then slain on Christmas Eve 1966, and Jack “the Hat” McVitie is stabbed at a party; Freddie Foreman later admits disposing of the body. On May 9, 1968, the law finally catches up: Ronnie and Reggie receive life with a 30-year minimum. With the bosses gone, the 1970s erupt in mobile, high-speed armed robberies. The Flying Squad rebuilds around informants, and supergrass Bertie Smalls cuts an unprecedented immunity deal while bodyguards trail him with “Wembley” as the danger code word. Public fury peaks in 1978 as police warn on TV, “we will shoot you dead.” The 1980s bring audacious payouts. At Security Express (Easter Monday, 1983), a guard steps out for milk and the gang escapes with £7 million, sending suspects to Spain’s “Costa del Crime” until pressure triggers a dramatic 1989 extradition of Freddie Foreman, later convicted of laundering. Then comes Brink's-Mat near Heathrow: inside man Anthony Black opens the door, guards are doused with petrol, and robbers stumble on 3.5 tons of gold. Kenneth Noy melts and recasts the bars, but suspicious bank activity helps convict Brian Robinson and Mickey McAvoy (25 years each); Black gets 6, Noy 14 for handling. In the end, it isn’t the gun that ends London’s big robberies but the camera. With banks and streets blanketed in CCTV, armed raids fall from 734 in 1978 to around 230 by the mid-80s. #KrayTwins #RichardsonGang #BrinksMat #FlyingSquad #UnderworldHistories #LondonCrime #TrueCrime #CCTV
