I have been a commercial artist and cartoonist my entire life. I can't underscore enough the importance of practicting constantly whenever you have time. Carry a drawing pad with you everywhere, and get some technical drafting pencils with replacement leads. I can look back at my cartoon strips and tell you when I drew it just by looking at the style. You never stay static, and get better with each passing year. It's funny how that happens

Who would have believed, that we are greyly painted?! Because grey reflects and emphasises the unnoticeable parts.

Incidentally, this is mirrored in digital art styles as well, where the artist will create a grayscale underpainting to solidify tone, and then use layers of color overwash to solidify hue and saturation to match. Tone tends to be the most important facet of the painting to maintain, so getting that right in the underpainting means that no matter the colors laid on it, they will still fall in the same value and keep the cohesiveness of the piece.

The painting is so good it recreates the vibe of an era that has long gone. 😊

Going from the umber undertone to the dead tone was like watching you go from carving wood, to sculpting from porcelain.
