Ive seen a lot of documentaries about this, some more factual than others. And Ive read a lot about this, since I find it an interesting conumdrum. The suicide theory just never made sense to me. Theres no evidence for it. All the circumstantial evidence goes against it. Its only based on witness accounts of Newson standing like a statue, not moving at all, and continuing full speed into the dead end. But the descriptions of him fit a health episode much better, fx. mini strokes. But back in 1975 that was almost completely unknown to medical science, so they just went with driver suicide. Mini strokes leave little to no evidence, and after 4 days of decomposition in sweltering heat of an already completely crushed body it would be impossible to find any evidence of it. Its also been scientifically proven, that a body produces alcohol after death as part of the decaying process, and the contents in Newsons blood was consistent with the time elapsed and the conditions, his body had endured. But that was also fairly unknown in 1975, hence why they could only say, that "some" may have been produced after death.
Additionally, there was already a system in use for a year or so, that wouldve automatically applied brakes, if a station was entered too fast, but it had not been installed at Moorgate. As I recall, the operation of the line would be transferred to another company within a few months, and so the then operator didnt want to incur the cost.
Thank you once again for a factual and compassionate video!

I was 16 when this happened, but never really knew all the details. When ever i hear the name Moorgate it takes me back to that terrible day.

I got rear-ended by a driver having a seizure once, whose seizure response made him stamp on the gas pedal and veer to the right hard enough to go off the road and through a hedge. (Everyone was surprisingly fine.) Doesn't surprise me to think that someone in a seizure or other locked-up state might keep doing what they had been before, or do it even harder. Absence seizures in particular can look like nothing at all.

I love how you finish each story with sending condolences to the victims' families. I appreciate the work and effort that goes into producing each of your documentaries. Thank you 🙏

I remember this as a child. Disasters are difficult enough today, but imagine the 1970s, with little of the equipment and protocols we have today. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Well done to Jeffrey’s wife, Val, for raising money for the hospital in his name. These details add a human element that is typically missed when others tell tales of disasters.

I remember it well. I was on foot going back to my job from getting payroll the bank. Then saw all these emergency vehicles at the station. I was about 20 yo. I am 78 now but can't forget. RIP to those who perished

Such a sad story. RIP to those who lost their lives, and my thoughts go out to the survivors and the families, friends and other loved ones of those who never got to go home.

I so remember this, my Dad was at the time employed by London Transport and explained to me about the dead man's handle, this is a mystery that will never be unravelled... additionally condolences to the victims and rescue workers that worked so hard.

First I'd like to say thank you for not using AI, I will always support a content creator who doesn't insult me by using AI to do their work for them. Your videos are so informative and non biased, most of the disasters and tragedies on your channel are new to me, and it's getting harder and harder to find original content about disasters and tragedies that hasn't been covered by every other history content creator on here. Thank you.

I’d ridden the NY City subway for over 30 years and never feared for my safety. However, I purposely never rode in the first car precisely for this reason. What a terrible accident.
