I'm not sure how it relates to loneliness, but at least in Tokyo, it is extremely common for people to do things by themselves: go to dinner, go to a movie, go to an event. I've also known people who go on vacations or short day trips (e.g., onsen) by themselves. This sort of solo activity is by comparison extremely rare in the U.S.
