However, the construction site for a Hanok is by no means an easy one. This is because traditional Hanoks require grappling with massive timbers weighing over 500kg and approximately 10,000 roof tiles instead of concrete and rebar, while modular Hanoks require fitting together wall panels and roofs weighing over 600kg with not a single millimeter of error. We meet the people who sweat to build traditional and modular Hanoks. (1) Completed by the Stubbornness of Craftsmen! Traditional Hanok, Where the Breath of Our Ancestors Lives Traditional Hanok, where the wisdom of our ancestors lives on! The elegance that Hanoks offer remains unchanged over time, making them highly popular. However, building a traditional Hanok requires the touch of countless people, including master carpenters and tile artisans. The starting point of Hanok construction is the foundation stone. The work of constructing the wooden framework begins by precisely erecting pillars weighing over 300 kg upon these foundation stones. Although times have improved and cranes are used for assistance, the mere task of lifting main beams weighing over 500 kg one after another onto the pillars is a dizzying experience. Furthermore, to ensure the main beams and pillars are joined together seamlessly, ceaseless hammering (the process of pounding with a wooden mallet) under the scorching sun is required. Furthermore, the task of climbing onto a roof over 4 meters high to stack approximately 13,000 roof tiles is breathtaking to watch... It is only after such a process that an elegant Hanok is finally born! In "Extreme Jobs," we visit the site of a traditional Hanok, said to last a thousand years once built. (2) Built in Just One Month! Modular Hanok Where Tradition Meets Modernity It typically takes at least six months to a year to build an average Hanok. However, there is a type of Hanok that has shortened this period to just over a month. This is the Hanok built using the modular construction method. The modular method refers to a technique where building materials, such as walls and roofs, are manufactured in advance using standardized processes and then assembled on-site. Modular Hanoks have the advantage of maintaining the framework of traditional Hanoks while shortening the construction period and lowering the cost. Even though most materials are manufactured in factories, the construction site is far from easy. Because modular Hanoks are constructed by inserting thick insulation into the wall and roof frames, the weight of a single wall or roof exceeds 600 kg. Building a 98㎡ (29.5 pyeong) Hanok requires approximately 26 walls and 12 roofs. The key point of modular Hanok construction is to fit these heavy walls and roofs together precisely, without even a 1mm margin of error. Since a moment of carelessness can lead to a major accident, workers cannot let their guard down for even a second. Yet, there are people who build Hanoks simply because they love wood!
