  As they say it in Poland, a drunk population is easy to control. Even today, you can get jobs done in exchange for vodka and in communist times it was an unofficial currency

  I'm Greek, but my grandfather still tells me stories of when he traveled to communist Bulgaria in his youth. Every time he forgot something essential such as gas, it was guaranteed he could get it by trading alcohol and marlboros with locals, like an unofficial currency. It's actually crazy how deep addiction can go within populations.

  I once talked to a Polish person who told me that under the Eastern Bloc, whenever there was unrest in Poland, the government would set alcohol prices much lower, to try an get people drunk and forget their problems.

  I am a Polish alcoholic. When I drink one beer/shot too much it just goes on like a spiral till the blackout. Stayed sober for almost two years rn. It is one of the hardest things in the world to stay social after such decision. 95 of 100 occasions sb'll ask you why you aint drinking or will try to convince you to do it. Any serious explanation ends with dead silence or making jokes about that everybody there is an alcoholic. Culture of drinking for the competition that spreads from small towns to the bigger cities and other countries makes it even worse. I used to say that in most of the countries you drink while hanging out but in Poland you hang out while drinking

  As an Bulgarian, I started drinking rakija at 13 and getting drunk time to time with my friends. For my parents this was normal, but I was forbidden to drink coffee 😂. At about 21-22 years old I almost turn alcoholic. Now at age of 31 I dont drink and feel wonderful.
