It’s really frustrating how you need to have a lawyer and a mechanic just to buy a car.

Some years ago, 2017 I think, my son was buying his first New Car. Deal was made, he and his mother in the financial office. The finance guy was a real stiff dude, trying to push stuff on the deal, son and his mom trying to negotiate the add ons. Finance guy said, “I don’t have all day to get this done, other buyers are waiting!” <br>At that, my son and his mom stood up, and said, “well, they don’t have to wait any longer”, and they walked out.

For years I’ve told the salesman to tell finance that I want zero discussion about extras or add on’s. IF finance goes down that road, I walk. Period. I expect to be in and out of finance in 15 minutes or less or I walk. This has worked perfectly for me on my last 6 car/truck purchases. I also tell the salesman that I want zero dealership branding on my vehicle when I pick it up. No stickers, license plate frames, branded mud flaps, etc. I’m not going to be a rolling billboard for your dealership. This has worked every time as well.

I did this. I was at finance had signed 80 percent of the papers. They asked me to sign for the theft protection. I said I don’t want that. They said it’s already installed and can’t take it off. I said then you have to pay for it. They refused. I said that’s ridiculous but wouldn’t budge. I stood up picked up all of the papers and started to tear all of them and asked them to delete all of my information. Suddenly they were able to remove the theft protection.

The last car I brought from a stealership I had already pre-negotiated the price via email and I had a record of it. I drove over an hour to the dealership which was several towns away and when I went in to the finance office the vehicle was $100 more than I had negotiated. I went through every line item I wasn't charged anymore for anything it was just $100 more. So now the salesman is completely MIA and I'm dealing with this young kid in a cheap tie who's angry that he has to go back and reprint everything. He literally said to me "it's only a hundred bucks." So I very kindly replied, "give me a hundred bucks and you don't have to go back and redo the paperwork."<br><br>Needless to say that hundred bucks was much more valuable when it was coming out of his pocket. I didn't walk out. I made them go redo the paperwork and get it to the correct price.

True story, my wife and I went with our daughter to buy her first car in 2020. A 2019 Civic with 13000 miles. After 6 plus hours of negotiations we made it to the finance office where we discovered over 4K of added crap in the contract. On his desk he had pictures of his wife and daughter (about 6/7 years old) and vacation photos. I commented on the photos and asked if that was his wife and daughter to which he replied “yes”. I then said “ as a father I am here to make sure my child gets a good, safe and reliable vehicle for an affordable price. In about 10 years you’ll be sitting where I am and undoubtedly will be guiding your own daughter to decline all this unnecessary add-ons as your primary duty as a father is to lookout for your child’s best interest. What kind of a father would I be if I allow this?” The man looked at me for a few seconds, took a deep breath and asked for the contract back which I had been looking at. He re-wrote the contract for exactly the price we agreed in the beginning plus tax, tag and tittle.

I walked out of a dealership in Miami when I was told that there was a $1,000 fee for interior cleaning and protection that was required by the manufacturer to help prevent transmission of COVID-19. When I asked if this product was applied by the manufacturer, they answered "yes." When I asked why this wasn't included in the MSRP, they knew they'd been caught in a lie. Basically they were charging $1,000 for a $10 spray bottle of ScotchGuard and another $10 spray bottle of Microban.

Car dealers are in business to make money, and will try to manipulate a customer if the customer doesn’t pay attention.<br><br>1. Do your homework first<br>2. Don’t fall in love with the car<br>3. Don’t be intimidated by anyone on the lot<br>4. Don’t be afraid to walk<br>5. Get pre approval from another lender<br>6. Negotiate the price of the car first<br>7. The dealer has 20% before holdback <br>8. Do not speak or commit about payments<br>9. Don’t let the salesman or manager dominate the conversation <br>10. Be aware of bait and switch <br>11. Do not allow add ons<br>12. Don’t fall for the lowball on your trade if there is one<br>13. There is a drastic difference between Blue book and Black book values <br>14. Keep in mind the F & I is your enemy<br>15. Get up and walk if you don’t get your comfortable plan<br>16. Don’t believe they can’t match or beat your lender, they will if they want your business <br>17. Don’t fall for the “ we want to earn your business “ nonsense <br>18. Allow them to make a reasonable profit <br>19. Typically a dealer won’t go into his holdback, but it does cost in advertising to get customers into the door<br>20. Be aware of the dealer “ Track “ system<br>21. Have an extra set of keys for your trade, just in case of a stall<br>22. Be careful while the salesman is out of the office, they may be listening in……<br>23. Do the test drive, and take your time<br>24. Completely check the car over for any hidden transit damage<br>25. A sales manager will step in if you don’t sign immediately, to try to close the deal….they are trained specifically for this<br>26. If they say, are you ready to buy today…..say if the deal meets MY criteria.<br>27. Don’t be pushed around, they will get very frustrated if you don’t act impulsively<br>28. Don’t say anymore than you have to<br>29. Be respectful and reasonable <br>30. Don’t be afraid to walk, again

The most depressing part of this conversation is that they are all acknowledging it will take 5 or 6 hours of screwing around to try to buy a car, thank you for the information

Went into the dealership to buy a used Mazda 3 listed at $7,000. After several hours I finally made it into the finance office and the woman was talking about a "Platinum VIP" membership and other benefits that would come with the purchase. I told her the only thing I cared about was the total cost. She then brings her boss in and he was trying to sell me all this extra BS. I asked him to turn his computer screen towards me so I could see a list of all the extras he was trying to sell and the cost of each. He started visibly shaking at this point. I said, "Okay... Then what would be the total cost of everything?" He said $12,600. I asked him why he thought I would ever pay almost $13,000 for a $7,000 car. I told him to remove all the extras and that I wanted to pay the price that was advertised. A half hour later as I sat in the lobby, a different guy approached me and said they could sell it for $7,000 and that I'd be paying $100 less per month than I had intended. Always put your foot down and never budge.
