You are more than just a number on a company spreadsheet. It’s time to start putting yourself first. Many people are realizing that the 'daily grind' just isn't worth the cost to their health and quality of life. I retired at age 64 on the day after I was diagnosed with afib. I had been employed by this large national company for 22 years. For much of my working years I put work over my health. My sleep was terrible—-maybe 5 or 6 hours per night. I ate crappy lunches or just got my lunch out of the vending machines. I gained 45 pounds and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My attitude was becoming increasingly negative, and I’m a cynic by nature. Since retiring, my health has dramatically improved, my sleep is better, and I am free to hike, work in my garden, go to the ocean, and I working on downsizing to a quieter area closer to nature. I’m almost down to my normal weight. I avoid thinking about my work life and concentrating on more positive things in life.

Hi all! I’m 51 and just retired earlier this year after a corporate layoff. I had already retired from the Air Force and was thinking I was going to work another 10 years but in corporate America. Well, that layoff was the best thing to happen to me in a long time. I love being fully retired.

Very good comments and observations. I agree completely with everything you mentioned. Planning on retiring soon myself.

I’m 57 and retiring at the end of March 2027
I’m totally done with employment , the work environment and all it’s associated nonsense
Thankfully I work from home most of the time but when I have to go into the office the false pretence BS culture drives me insane and I find I have a close to zero tolerance for it
I have to bite my tongue to prevent my mouth from saying what my face is probably saying

I confirm not. I just got laid off by a company that I was at for over 10 years, and I was one of the longest-standing, best employees according to everybody, INCLUDING the people who made the decision to lay me off

I'm 52 Hardest part of still working is not the stress of the job itself, but the time spent away from home now. Oh and having to work with Gen Z kids now.

I have been working as an accountant since my mid 20s. I’m approaching 59 1/2 where I can start drawing from my retirement accounts. My job is getting to the point where it is an absolute burden to get up and fulfill the demands. The job has there for me. I’m just tired and counting down the days where I can do as I please.

I’ve been in a public facing career in public service for close to 27 years - I’m tired, but I can’t retire because my kids are both in university. I use my evenings and weekends to do the things I enjoy; staying active is so important. I’ve travelled all over the world the last 40 years because I didn’t want to wait until I was “old and mobile”.

The scamdemic is what made me check out. Sold the big house, built a small one and PEACED out at 48. Now 52 and I control my time now. I’m also an RN and I work 2 days a week until I fully retire. ❤
