  On the subject of myths. The best that can be said of Max Hastings as an historian is the compliment I would also apply to Anthony Beevor. He knows how to craft and tell a good story.

  This was really interesting. I dont think good old British armour gets enough credit. The creases had been ironed out by Normandy i think. Would like to hear more from JW sometime.

  The Battle for Hamel, France, 4th July, 1918, was a very good example of combined arms warfare with Australian and US infantry supported by British tanks. This very well planned battle incorporated many of the tactics developed over the last 4 years and improvising some new tactics. Such as the first air drop of ammunition to front line troops. The objectives were meant to be reached in 90 minutes but they were not actually taken until 93 minutes after the start of the attack. Various methods were used to confuse the Germans. And artillery was used in a well timed rolling barrage followed by tanks cutting the barbed wire. Much more was involved. General Sir John Monash was knighted Order of the Bath shortly after the victory. This was the first combined battle with Australian, British and US troops. The battle was a limited attack and not planned as a break through. In August allied forces attacked with combined arms tactics that devastated German units and began the last 100 days of victories that ended WW1. &nbsp;Such thorough planning was used again in the Battle of El Alamein in WW2. A turning point in the war in the west. A clear example of a combined arms battle.

  As a decades long American student of 20th century armored warfare I found your guest an amazing and brilliant repository of information. &nbsp;Had a devil of a time keeping up given his rapid-fire oral delivery together with his rich English accent. &nbsp;But I suppose that’s my problem, not his. &nbsp;Hope you have him on your show again in the future.

  I know, I&apos;m commenting about 3 weeks early. One thing that I think both Woody and Jonathan would be interested in are the AFV Technical Reports that the Ministry of Supply created about every month sending back reports about the reliability and performance of tanks and other vehicles. They seem to have not survived or not completely survived at Kew, but they did at Library and Archives Canada(!) and a lot of them which were turned into microfilm have since been digitized and anyone can read them online for free. <br><br>There is a lot about design and development of tanks which are at Kew and ... a lot of authors just aren&apos;t looking at, but P M Knight has. If you&apos;re going to leverage previously published books to write your own, look at his, because they&apos;re just jam packed full of information.
