Retirees Regret These Small Campers — The 2 Builds That Actually Last

A retired couple sells the big fifth wheel — too much trailer, too much truck, too much work. They buy the little camper that was supposed to make life easy. Eighteen months later it's on the classifieds, and the ad says what those ads always say: barely used. Small was supposed to be the answer. Nobody told them small isn't simple. Most small campers are built the exact same way as the big trailers people regret — there's just less of it. Here's where the regrets cluster, and the two ways of building a small camper that actually hold up. Nobody pays me to tell you a rig is good. The one thing I sell is at the end, and you'll see it coming. (Then ask what the floor deck is.) A fair word: neither lasting build is cheap, and neither is immune. Bearings are still bearings, tires still age out by the date on the sidewall rather than the tread, sealant is still on a schedule, and a neglected egg still rots its floor. Sealant beats shape, every time. The weight sticker still rules too — small campers carry small payloads, and water is still eight pounds a gallon. Most of you don't need me. You need a flashlight, half an hour of not being rushed, and a list in your hand so the excitement doesn't drive. Getting close to buying? Watch the six things almost nobody checks on a dealer lot next. I'm Ray.
