Mexico City Was 250 Miles Away. It Still Fell.

On the morning of 19 September 1985, a magnitude 8 earthquake broke roughly 170 KM of the Mexican coast off Michoacán — and killed people in a city 350 KM inland. Five years and eight months earlier, six seismologists had published a short paper naming that exact stretch of coast as a seismic gap. There was no press conference and no headline. The science was correct, and it saved nobody at all. This video explains why naming a danger years ahead of the event is not the same as being able to do anything about it, and why the death toll in Mexico City was decided by the ground rather than by the earthquake. We cover the accelerographs installed along that coast because a great earthquake was expected there, the fourteen to sixteen percent of gravity they measured almost on top of the rupture, the record from the old lakebed where the ground travelled about twenty-one centimetres each way once every two seconds, the drained clay of Lake Texcoco that is tuned to that rhythm, and why it destroyed the six to fifteen storey band while the forty-four storey Torre Latinoamericana came through undamaged. It closes on the hospitals, the aftershock, what the collapses exposed, and how pumping the aquifer is shortening the lakebed's rhythm — with the 2017 earthquake, which hit shorter buildings, as the evidence.
