Believe it or not, in some regions of Texas, such as Texoma, there are still "square deals" to be found. Specifically, I relocated from Maryland to Texoma eleven years ago, was a tenant for six years and then purchased my homestead 55 months ago. It includes two dwellings totaling 3,600 square feet, 16 rooms including four bedrooms, three full bathrooms, five fenced yards, two garages and a carport, four porches/patios, four workshops, etc — all on 1.25 acres in a clean, quiet, safe, predominantly senior-citizen neighborhood. 55 months ago, I secured a fixed 2.25% interest rate, which has allowed me to pay 250% of the scheduled mortgage amount, thereby enabling me to pay it off completely within the next seven years — 18.5 years ahead of schedule. The main domicile is 75 years old — pier-and-beam — and the bungalow is about 30 years old. Both dwellings were beautifully and fully furnished, and their decor suited my taste and hermit lifestyle. But, the kicker is my total mortgage payment, including homeowner's and flood insurance premiums, amounts to less than 5% of my net monthly retirement income. And the total utility (electric, natural gas) bill averages only about $200 per month. Though I've resided here only 55 months, on several occasions, I've received cash offers to sell it for double what I paid for it. I, however, would NOT sell my homestead for all the money in all the multiverses combined! It's not an investment; rather, it's a place to live, enjoy and bequeath to my granddaughter. "And it's still all good, including my life!" 😊
