As well as the tourist boat, I recommend using the orange flag and yellow flag public transit boats to get around on, up and down the Chao Praya. I was staying near Thewet Pier, on Phitsanulok Road, where there are no trains, so I used the boats nearly every day. They are very cheap (16 baht - $NZD 80 cents, USD about 40 cents) and it's good to be out on the river. When I was feeling hot and sticky with sore feet I would just ride the boat from one end to the other - you get wonderful views, a seat, a cooling river breeze, and can people-watch the locals going about their daily business. Always more locals than farangs. Once you get used to the overall process, it's dead easy to use them.

I also recommend the local buses if you're a little adventurous and don't need everything curated and comfortable. There is one (the #53) which runs from Phitsanulok Road round to Hua Lamphong Station, all through Chinatown, along past the Grand Palace and Flower Market etc. The round trip takes about an hour, costs about 8 baht, (NZD 40 cents, USD 20 cents) and you get to see a wide range of neighbourhoods. No aircon unless the bus is moving and the window is open :) I was always the only farang onboard.

Did 4 times a cycling tour in Bangkok. It’s always one of the best things to do. Co van Kessel is a serious company but always in numbers up to 20 bikers on the streets. Better avoid and choose a smal company in groups of 4 and a lower price.

I was in Bangkok last year and visited most of the main spots, but I definitely missed a lot of hidden gems. Now I’m back in the Down Under and slightly regretting it! Thanks for the recommendations on the cycling and street food tours!!!

I’m coming back again this year and can’t wait.
