  Dan Gibson must be credited with originally positing  the Petra Hypothesis through his academic publications, such as Qur'anic Geography (2011), which was subsequently made popular through his documentary “The Sacred City” (2016).

  John of Damascus wrote Against Heresies.<br><br>A later interpolation from the 12th Century suggest Muslims still believed Mecca to be near Edessa.

  I watched an interesting video a number of years back similar to this discussion. From memory a couple of key points were the mihrab in the oldest built mosques points towards Petra, following the schism in Islam, initially for about 20 or so years it pointed half way between Petra and Mecca in the mosques built. Afterward that brief period, the mihrab in all following mosques pointed to Mecca. Petra also matches the description given by the Prophet Mohamod accurately including damage, Mecca does not.
