  Having heard his work over the decades, I can assure that He does know what he is talking about. During presentations like this, it would be nice to insert the screen image that he is referring to, thus enabling a clearer explanation of the process. Also, If a question or answer is offered, it would also help to restate said comment for the remote listener. I have used the same approach and understanding of concept for over 10 years with digital and agree that this is valid on all counts.

  I wish every teacher, and the manufacturers of these desks (especially those at a lesser price than the $75K unit on this video), focused as much as Robert does on proper gain settings before anything even comes out of the FOH. This is a simple and direct explanation of something that trashes more mixes before they begin than anything else. Well done!

  Recently started using plugins for live, and that’s when it hit me i had my gain all wrong, all plugins expect line levels, so I thought i had it right because i had left a lot of headroom, by running my preamps at -30 or -40 dBs, so when i used plugins, they couldn’t see my signal very well, that’s when i realized i need to optimize for my mixer, not i run my channels at around -12 to -18, that’s what the manufacturer recommends, and now waves plugins work like magic. Thanks for sharing this!!
