Almost everyone who watches immediately says John Coffey looked scared, gentle, or innocent as soon as they see his face. It is a testimony to how good of an actor he was.

Remember this is 1935, very few houses , had indore plumbing for the toilet.. most were outhouses over a very deep hole in the ground.. (aka. the back yard)

He knew Paul would understand, he also hears and sees alot of bad daily, and knows Paul also is humane and feels compassion for even the inmates.

A common field mouse like Mr Jingles has a normal lifespan of about 2-3 years, at 60+ he has lived 20 or 30 times his normal lifespan, so if it is the same for a human Paul has thousands of years to go.
